Promotion at the Charité
From the first of November 2017, PhD registration at the Charité is now possible as the new promotion regulations have come into power. Requirements are detailed at the website of the Charité promotion office (advanced track). In brief: next to the thesis, students need to gather 30 ECTS points by attending seminars, workshops, courses etc. The curriculum is divided into 4 different categories, the requirements for each of those can be found on the website of the promotion office. The new promotion rules are valid for all PhD students at the Charité. Other promotion trajectories (Dr.rer.nat.) within BIOQIC are for mathematics at the TU and for chemistry at the FU. We have adapted our website according to the new promotion rules, especially the advised number of publications. The aim should be for three publications; if possible, first-authorship is encouraged. However, BIOQIC’s unique characteristic is the cooperation between different fields of research and between different researchers. Therefore, co-authorships by students are also highly encouraged.
In order to start your promotion at the Charité, you have to register your promotion as soon as possible at the promotion office (Campus Virchow-Klinikum, Promotionsbüro, Augustenburger Platz 1) of the Charité. For this, you need to fill the registration form (https://promotion.charite.de/fileadmin/user_upload/microsites/sonstige/promotion/Neue_PO/Promotionsvereinbarung_eng_NEU_3-12-2012.pdf) together with your doctoral supervisor. Fortunately, non-German EU and in some cases non-EU certificates don’t have to be recognized anymore by the ‘Konferenz der Kultusminister der Länder in der BRD’ when they are listed in the ‘anabin’ database of foreign certificates (http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html). Be aware, however, that you need to provide a print-out of the database with your promotion registration.
Once you are registered, you are officially entitled to start your research work. When you are registered, you can choose whether you matriculate as a PhD student at the Charité or not. It is not obligatory and you need to pay fees but there are several advantages such as a discount on the food in the mensa and a pass to use public transportation.

On the form you find information on what you need to bring with you to the matriculation office, which is at the Campus Mitte, Hannoversche Staße 19. If you are from outside the EU, you need to show also your residence permit where it is stated that you are in Germany for the purpose of promotion (‘Aufenthaltstitel mit Promotionszweck’).
Please note: For those of you who would like to immatriculate at the Charité and do not possess a German certificate: you need to hand in a translated version of your bachelor certificate, in addition to your master (this is not stated on their website)! This is the case even if you studied within the European Union.
Promotion at the TU
If your supervisor is working at the TU. In principle, the procedure is similar to that of the Charité but you will obtain a Dr. rer. nat. title. You have to register your promotion (http://www.naturwissenschaften.tu-berlin.de/fileadmin/f2/Forschung/Absicht_englisch.pdf)
