11th Young Academy for Medical Technology (NAMT) „Inflammation“
12-16 January 2026, Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Germany
Inflammation is a rapid and highly effective defense response of the body’s immune system to a variety of tissue damage, such as infection, injury, autoimmune disease or cancer. However, dysregulated inflammation can lead to excessive, chronic or suppressed immune responses that promote the development of common diseases such as sepsis, rheumatoid arthritis, liver fibrosis, Crohn’s disease and cancer. This enormous plasticity of inflammatory processes currently poses a major challenge for their detection, characterization and quantification by clinical diagnostic imaging. As a result, current biomarkers for the detection and monitoring of inflammatory and inflammation-associated diseases in routine clinical radiology are often unspecific for inflammation and early stages of potentially dangerous tissue damage. In this context, the planned Young Academy for Medical Technology (NAMT) aims to sensitize young scientists in the field of clinical imaging for physically based and quantifiable image markers for the detection and characterization of inflammation and to contribute to the further development of medical imaging as a diagnostic key technology for the non-invasive detection and assessment of inflammation-related tissue changes. The NAMT will support young scientists in developing an independent and autonomous research profile early in their careers and in establishing collaborations with renowned experts from science and industry, academic networks and established research institutions in the field of medical technology in Germany and abroad. To this end, an interdisciplinary exchange between specialists in biology, medicine and technical fields of imaging sciences is planned, in particular to introduce clinical scientists to basic scientists. In order to shorten the learning curve for young scientists, the Academy’s program integrates practical training in applying for research funding and provides information on research funding instruments and project management. Accordingly, the event is aimed primarily at doctoral students in the final phase of their PhD/MD studies or at young scientists who have completed their doctorate.
The research training group BIOQIC (Graduiertenkolleg GRK2260) together with SFB1340 (Matrix-in-Vision) and the Department of Radiology of the Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin are going to host the 11th DFG Workshop for Early Career Investigators in Medical Technology and Medical Physics – NAMT-2026. The topic of the workshop will be “Inflammation”. The scientific program will gather outstanding international experts from the field of quantitative and clinical medical imaging to teach young scientists about the current state of the art and the latest developments in MRI. The central goal of our workshop was to raise awareness for the need of reproducible and biophysics-based MRI markers. XX talented young scientists from all over Germany were invited to discuss and advance their own projects and to apply for research funding in the aftermath of the workshop. After the workshop, the selected scientists can apply for DFG funding for pursuing own research ideas in the near future. During 2026, the proposals will be assessed by the DFG during a 1-day colloquium.
