SUMMARY:Scientific symposium radiology
DESCRIPTION:Dear colleagues\, \nLike in the last years\, Professor Hamm invites you to a scientific radiology symposium on 09/06/2017 (14:00 – 18:99 h). The scientific symposium should be more or less similar to last year’s symposium. There will be short (6 minutes\, junior) and long (9 minutes\, senior) presentations\, as determined not by the age of the presenter but by the size and maturity of the presented project. \nWelcomed are all work-in-progress projects and planned studies\, since the symposium serves the scientific idea-exchange and it should reveal the synergies of single groups. For the young colleagues (including interested PJs\, PhD students\, assistants etc.)\, who are especially encouraged to join the symposium\, the symposium will be an orientation which scientific themes are processed in our department and whom they can contact in case their interest has been successfully raised for one of the projects. \nIn the name of Professor Hamm\, Professors Taupitz\, Makowski\, PD Elgeti and I\, representing the campi and the preclinical research groups\, would like to request the submission of topics. You can send them via email (timm.denecke@charite.de) to me (title\, author\, junior/senior presentation\, including a short description of the content) \nTo have a program as diverse as the several past years\, we need of course the input of all colleagues of the three campi CBF\, CCM\, CVB as well as the affiliated working groups (please forward this invitation). Until now we had approximately 25 presentations and double as many presentation registrations\, so it was decided by lottery which theme was included in the program. The same process will be applied this year. \nDEADLINE 22/05/2017 !!! Please note the deadline\, so there will be sufficient time for selection\, programming and your preparation! \nWe look forward to your submissions! \nWith kind regards\, \n  \nTimm Denecke \n  \nProf. Dr. M. Taupitz    Prof. Dr. M. Makowski    PD Dr. T. Elgeti            PD Dr. T. Denecke

SUMMARY:Mathematical Mysteries of Deep Neural Networks\, by Prof. Dr. Stéphane Mallat (École Normale Supérieur)
DESCRIPTION:Mathematical Mysteries of Deep Neural Networks”: by Prof. Dr. Stéphane Mallat (École Normale Supérieur) \nAbstract: \nClassification and regression require to approximate functions in high dimensional spaces. Avoiding the dimensionality curse opens many questions in statistics\, probability\, harmonic analysis and geometry. Convolutional deep neural networks can obtain spectacular results for image analysis\, speech understanding\, natural languages and many other problems. We shall review their architecture and analyze their mathematical properties\, with many open questions. We show that the architectures implement multiscale contractions\, where wavelets have an important role\, and they can learn groups of symmetries. This will be illustrated through applications to image and audio classification\, but also to statistical physics and computations of molecular energies in quantum chemistry. \nPlease send an email to office@bimos.tu-berlin.de <mailto:office@bimos.tu-berlin.de> to register\, if you would like to attend.

SUMMARY:Molecular imaging strategies to approach the tumour microenvironment
DESCRIPTION:Molecular imaging strategies to approach the tumour microenvironment \nMichel Eisenblätter\, MD\, PhD \nTranslational Research Imaging Center; Institut für Klinische Radiologie\, Universitätsklinikum Münster und\n Comprehensive Cancer Imaging Centre\, Division of Imaging Sciences & Biomedical Engineering\, King’s College London \nKolloquium der Abteilung 8\nMedizinphysik und metrologische Informationstechnik \nTumours are not a homogeneous mass of cancer cells but comprise a variety of tumour-associated immune cells\, stromal and endothelial cells. It is this neatly organised interplay that ensures a nutrient supply for the growing tumour\, allows tumours to grow unharmed from anti-tumour immunity and promotes local invasion. \nWhile early cancer therapy widely ignored the fact that a plethora of host cells is involved in malignant disease\, more recent cancer therapy acknowledges and even uses this fact for more efficient treatment. Anti-vascular and immune check-point therapy directly address components of the tumour microenvironment (TME).Diagnostic medicine however still doesn’t hold sufficient means to accompany TME-centred therapy with regards to therapy selection or monitoring.\nTarget-specific molecular imaging in combination with selected serum parameters can provide criteria for patient stratification and indicators for specific therapy response. For this\, optical and nuclear imaging approaches have been investigated. The visualisation and measurement of abundance and activity of TME key components such as immunomodulatory monocytes is reflective of the state of tumour-mediated reorganisation of the TME and predicts the future tumour development. Similarly\, immune-remodelling in premetastatic tissue\, supposedly initiated by tumour-secreted extracellular vesicles\, can be detected and used as a predictor of metastatic tumour spread.\nFostering cancer research and the search for potential therapeutic targets\, the combination of gene reporter imaging with target-specific imaging and serum analysis will allow for further characterisation of tumour-associated immune cells and their respective differentiation state in the tumour vicinity.

SUMMARY:Time-domain waveform modeling and inversion from millimeters to the Globe
DESCRIPTION:Time-domain waveform modeling and inversion from millimeters to the Globe \nBy Christian Böhm of ETH \nAbstract: Waveform inversion has become a powerful tool for parameter estimation in many exciting domains such as seismic tomography\, medical imaging\, and non-destructive testing. Despite the vastly different scales\, all these applications have in common that they can be stated as a PDE-constrained optimization problem governed by some variant of the time-dependent wave equation that invert for unknown material properties or external forces.\nIn this talk we present Salvus\, an HPC software package designed to solve large-scale full-waveform inverse problems\, with a focus on both flexibility and performance. Salvus is a collection of packages covering the complete toolchain of waveform inversion\, ranging from creating unstructured meshes in two and three dimensions to an automated\, interactive and graph-based workflow management framework capable of orchestrating all necessary components. The wave equation solver is based on a high-order spectral-element discretization and supports a diverse collection of wave propagation physics\, such as viscoelasticity or solid-fluid coupling. Adjoint-based computations of gradients and Hessian-vector products as well as custom-tailored compression methods are built-in\, which allows a tight integration with optimization methods to solve the inverse problem.\nSalvus bridges the gap between research and production codes with a design based on C++ template mixins and Python wrappers that separate the physical equations from the numerical core. It was constructed by following modern software design practices\, testing protocols\, and by establishing its foundations upon existing high-level scientific libraries\, such as PETSc and Eigen.\nThe goal of this presentation is to introduce the code and its underlying mathematical framework. Furthermore\, we show several numerical examples across the scales.\n \nOrganizer:\nMartin Hammerschmidt\, Zuse-Institut Berlin (ZIB)\nBereich Numerische Mathematik\nAbteilung Numerische Analysis und Modellierung\nTakustr. 7\, D-14195 Berlin-Dahlem
